I just wanna drink beer and play Atari

So yesterday was pretty eventful. As it turns out, my brother’s hockey team made it to the finals in their playoffs, so it was essentially required attendance (I wanted to go anyway, so it didn’t make much difference). There are two notes I should add on here. First, we’re talking high school hockey here, and since unlike our southern neighbours, nobody in Canada gives two shits about college sports, the fact that high school hockey has so much buzz around it is kinda impressive. Second, the game was so “hyped-up” that they decided that it would be played in the MTS Centre. I played a game in the old arena once when I still played hockey, and that was like the greatest achievement in my life, so I can assume it was pretty cool for these kids to get to play at the MTS Centre. Anyway, they got absolutely railed. Four to one doesn’t sound so bad, but the way CPET was playing, I’m amazed they got the one goal they did. The only kid on the ice who seemed to know what game he was playing was my brother, and he was the goalie. The rest of them were tripping over the blue lines and skating at a pace usually reserved for seniors. The defensemen spent most of the game just watching the other guys skate by and clearly couldn’t be bothered enough to even try to keep the puck in the opposition’s end. It was ridiculous. And sad. I still wonder how they managed to get to the final game. But I suppose the silver medal isn’t so bad, considering the team’s history. CPET didn’t even have a hockey team until last year, and that team didn’t win a single game. So yeah, second place is a definite improvement. Afterwards we went to Montana’s with my grandparents and uncle for dinner, and it normally isn’t worth mentioning, but if you haven’t been to Montana’s, you should definitely check it out. They have huge sheets of paper laid out over every table just so you can doodle all over them while you wait. Easily my favourite restaurant.

Super Equilibrium Bros

They say you can set any mood with the right tune. This has got to be the funniest thing I’ve seen in a while.

To balance out the entertainment levels, here’s the collection of this year’s Super Bowl commericals. You know, if you’ve got nothing better to do. Which is likely considering which website you’re reading.

That’s really it for today. I don’t feel like bumming any more links at the moment. However, I just discovered that Resident Evil: Deadly Silence comes out tomorrow. The name was pretty accurate, as that one really snuck up on me. Well, there’s another forty bucks down the tubes. So anyway, what’s up? We never talk anymore. I feel like we’re falling apart. You know what would solve that problem? Joining the forums. Or if you’ve already joined, why not post something?

Astro zombies

I’m like a kid with a new toy. I just can’t resist the urge to make unnessecary posts because FTP is fun to play with. Anyway, I’ve got all the 2005 news archives ready to go. I’ll probably finish up the rest of the news archive tomorrow and then get started on the pseudo-articles.

For the sake of substance, have I told you how awesome Tony Hawk’s American Wasteland is yet? Well yeah, it is. I was pretty firm in my opinion that THPS2 was the best Tony Hawk game ever, but THAW is putting up some serious competition. The game itself is what you’d expect, with all sorts of skating action and some oddball missions. The controls havent’t changed, though balance seems a little more sensitive than usual. Most notably for me (and the only thing that the console version holds over the DS’ American SK8Land) is the soundtrack. Holy smokes it’s huge, and it kicks ass too. Tons of bands I love, including My Chemical Romance, Thrice, and the Doors. Tons of other great stuff too from the Dead Kennedys, Thursday, An Endless Sporadic, and lots more. I’ve been searching for a torrent, but so far the best I’ve come up with is one that has all the “classic punk covers”. It’s not even half the entire soundtrack, but it’s plenty good for now. Oh, right, and the Classic Mode rules. As much as I enjoy free-roaming, the two-minute challenge runs are still my favourite way to play. It’s also got some really neat customization options that let you design your own deck and graffiti designs, though it lacks the drawing ability of THAS. Should you buy the game? If you’ve liked any THPS or THUG game, hell yeah. If you have a distaste for this kind of game, maybe give it a try anyway. While the DS version has slightly tighter gameplay, THAW is a lot deeper and has a ton more features and music.

The first paragraph contains gross. You were warned.

I just saw the most horrible thing I’ve ever seen on children’s programming. It was this frightening dancing puppet that was a dead ringer for the infamous Brian Peppers, just with popsicle stick arms. Chills me to the bone. After a little research, I fould a picture of the monster. A bit small, but you get the idea.

In other news, went to a hockey game last night. Kickass game, the Moose raped the Peoria Rivermen 6 to 1, and there were some fantastic goals; the first in particular. But there was one thing bugging me the whole time: Peoria. Sound familiar? And to top that off, their logo resembles Stan from American Dad. It left me pondering if by chance Seth McFarlane was the owner of the team. Also, at one point there was a “wave” going around for like 3 minutes, and I lost three precious minutes of hockey because it was so damned entrancing. Did I mention that the box seats at the MTS Centre are ultra-posh?

The best part of the game, however, was during the last two minutes. Seriously, 1:06 left on the clock and a brawl breaks out. At first it’s just the standard two guys throwing down, but then a couple more guys start throwing punches, and finally a third pair starts trying to beat each other’s face in. It was magical. Anyone who says hockey is boring needs to go to a Moose game. I’ve never been disappointed, and that’s even without the beer. (Seriously, it’s too goddamned expensive.)

Prolonged dumpage

This one here’s kind of a follow-up to yesterday’s post. Some continuation, some new thoughts, it’s all good. Unless you have no interest at all in what I think about.

I was out all day, and again took the liberty of playing my DS all over the place. Today I attracted the attention of no less than three people, and on a broad range of ages too. I’m starting to feel like the Nintendo DS version of that dude from the Wendy’s commercials. I’mma have to get out more, and make sure I get selling those DS units. Maybe somewhere along the way, I’ll find a friend who will play with me. Maybe I’ll be able to beat a human opponent at Madden. Oh yeah, I bought that. I have to say, I made the right decision. Not only does it interest more casual gamers, but I’m quite enjoying it as well. I really needed something different, and football has answered my call.

My next article will not be so much an article, but something akin to this, should I ever figure out how to do it. After looking at the source, I could probably put it together, but it’ll take a long damn time. Possibly all week, or longer, depending on how ambitious I feel. Or maybe I’ll just rush it and not mind it looking like crap. And that’s all you’re getting for now.

I also picked up The Urbz for DS, under my brother’s counsel. He was right. I really like the game. The only problem is that it uses both the face buttons and the touch screen, so you either fumble between stylus and thumb or just use your finger on the touch screen. The game doesn’t really call for extremely precise pointing, so the latter is acceptable, but after being stylus-trained by WarioWare and Feel the Magic, it feels kind of odd not to use it. Anyhow, it’s a really good game. I’m kind of upset I didn’t know this earlier.

I finally found a Tesla CD! Thank you, Music World! I mean, it’s the newest one, which is excellent, but I really wanted The Great Radio Controversy. Still no show from Firehouse though. I did pick up Foreigner’s The Very Best and Beyond, which is also great, so I’m not too disappointed.

Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance is no longer available anywhere. I’ve looked through around six electronics stores, three gaming stores and two trade-in stores, but nothing. I’ve found Sons of Liberty, and even The Document of Metal Gear Solid 2, but no Substance. So here’s the deal. You find it anywhere, you pick it up and bring it and the recepit to me. I’ll pay you the cost, plus a $15 bounty. The same goes for the Evil Dead 2 DVD. I’ve found Evil Dead and Army of Darkness, but no Evil Dead 2. Maybe I’ll put up a bounty chart of things I want but cannot find, and cannot be arsed to buy online.

I found the first season Corner Gas DVD today. I can’t recall exactly why I didn’t buy it on sight. As I said yesterday, I love the show. Possibly even more than Futurama, and I have all the Futurama DVD sets. Mmm, I love material posessions.

I can’t eat 40 timbits without getting sick. I’m a sham of a man.

The problem with me constantly buying CDs (aside from the rapidly depleting storage space) is that I’m never going to get around to doing that article on my CD colleciton. Maybe it’ll have to go under the pseudo-articles and be updated as new discs come and (God forbid) go.

That’s all for today. I’ll try not to bog down the blog with so much impertinent information during the next week. I’ve got the weekend off, so I’ll be making sure I devote (at least) Saturday to article production. That is, if I’m not too wrapped up in Samurai Legend Musashi. Two days, baby.

Taking a mind dump. Excuse the odor

The coolest thing happened to me yesterday. So I’m at Subway, right. I’m done eating, so as would be the natural thing for me, I pull out my DS and get my game on. And then all of a sudden, this dude sits down across from me and starts asking stuff about it, and going on about how he finds it so amazing. I found it cool, because I don’t know a single person who is interested in the DS (nobody I know can handle its pure awesomeness), and it was nice to for once have a little chat about it. Just thought I’d bring it up.

My bro’s hockey team got creamed 8-4 last night. They started off real strong, with two goals in the first five minutes, but then it just went downhill. It was pretty bad, but the defencemen were really slacking. Can’t say he was having the best game of his life either, though. But then again, guess letting in eight out of like seventy billion shots isn’t so bad.

Three days until Musashi!

Following GDC 2005, we’ve got some things to look forward to on the Nintendo front. Seems the Revolution is gonna be some hardcore online business, and Gamecube backwards-compatible. PGC has a bunch of info, so check that out if you’re interested. Again, I’d like to bring up the new Zelda. There’s a poster of it in the Minish Cap player’s guide, so I’m thinking maybe I’mma buy that. What can I say? I need a Zelda poster.

I’m also considering getting Madden 2005 for the DS. Any time ago, this thought would never have even crossed my mind, but for reasons I cannot properly put into words, I want to own some sort of sports game, and there aren’t any hockey games for the DS yet. It’s Madden or Tiger Woods, and I don’t like the way Tiger is pointing at me so condescendingly.

How is it that I’ve gone 18 years without ever listening to Duran Duran? I can’t imagine how such a good band has gone under my radar until just recently.

iMesh 5 is pretty. Probably coated in spyware (they claim to be clean, but…), but my God is it pretty. And efficient. At least 76 times moreso than the last version. Say what you will about the spyware issue, I still like iMesh. I’ve got plenty of cleaning utilities.

I added a little hit stats dealie down on the sidebar. Click it for more info.

Is it wrong to try to win over a girl who’s currently seeing someone by pretending to be much more awesome than you are? (Not like it gets much more awesome than me) We’re still cool, even after the incident, but I’m thinking maybe I should cool the engines for a while. TV has tought me differently, so I’m not sure what the proper protocol is for this situation. Advice is appreciated.

Why is it that not a single store around here carries either Firehouse or Tesla? Best Buy and Future Shop I can see, but HMV? Come on! I guess I’ll be having to make that dreaded venture downtown if I hope to secure any music from either of these awesome bands. I hate downtown.

Speaking of Firehouse, they’re pretty much kicking ass on the ol’ AudioScrobbler list. You should totally sign up for an account there, even if you never use the thing, just so I can add more people to my friends list. And it’s just a neat little thing to have.

Is there a Corner Gas DVD? Amazon says no. Dammit. That’s an awesome show. If you don’t watch it, you so very totally should. I can’t stress enough how hilarious it is. Best show I’ve watched in years. Upon further investigation, the official website says yes. Flippin’ sweet.

Old dreams die hard

We all have those things that we would love to do more, but never get around to for some reason or another. For me, it’s playing hockey, or even just shooting a puck around with my brothers. Not a day goes by that I don’t wish I were in better shape and more active so that I could still play hockey. But last night, I tried to go out and skate around, but I just couldn’t, dammit. It was mostly my too-small skates that were to blame, but when I got out on the ice, I realized that I had pretty much forgotten how to skate. I mean, I never fell or anything, but I had trouble cornering, and any ounce of skill I once had at stopping was gone. So I’ve decided to put forth a small effort to keep myself in in sightly better physical condition and to get out on the ice more than once every two years. I love hockey, and there’s no way I’m just going to sit on the sidelines and watch everyone else have all the fun. But that’s besides the point. I have something important to say.

You know that “coming soon” business that was on the sidebar for who knows how long? It got a little sidetracked (translation: I’ve been procrastinating big time) and won’t be ready for a while to come still, so I decided to do away with it. Also, I wanted to add a link to my AudioScrobbler profile so you peoples might be able to see what I listen to (and listen to it as well. Click the “personal” button near the top to listen to the music in my library). Since I wanted it in a place where you could see it whenever, a blog post was no place for it, and there was really no other good spot on the sidebar, so it found it’s new home replacing the *coming soon*. Also, I was asked about it yesterday, and there are three articles in the works. Two about some stuff I have in my room (you’ll understand later) and the third, well, you’ll see in two weeks tops. My hint is that it’ll be the third, but not last, in it’s series of articles. Good guessing. Oh, and I was contemplating a second OliverBot article, but then I discovered how stupid the first one was, so that’s trashed. Unless I get three unique e-mails asking for it. So it’s pretty much decided, no second OliverBot article.

The Funk Master is impressed

Normally, I don’t buy a lot of sports games. Hell, if it weren’t for the Mario sports line, I probably wouldn’t buy any. While I’m here, Mario Power Tennis rocks. But back to my story. I generally don’t buy the sports games not because I don’t like them (I love hockey games), but because they don’t really catch my eye as something original or overly impressive. But that’s all about to change.

EA and Nintendo have been getting rather cozy lately, and this collaboration is starting to spice up the GameCube versions of EA’s sports titles. First off is Fight Night Round 2. Not only is SNES classic Super Punch-Out!! included in the game, but if you manage to finish it, you can play as Little Mac in the main game. He looks terribly scary when rendered in 3D, but I love Punch-Out!! so this is a game that I’m definitely buying, if only for that.

Also, the GameCube version of NBA Street V3 is going to include Mario, Luigi and Peach as playable characters. They’re horribly misproportioned when compared to the regular players, but it’s a cool idea nonetheless, and warrants at least a rent. I’m quite excited to hear about what other stuff they’ve got up their sleeves, but I’m pretty sure this collaboration, along with Nintendo’s own licensed baseball game (as long as it’s good), is going to end up helping the GameCube get more into the sports genre, where it’s currently suffering pretty badly.

Oh yes, and there’s a new Steve article up. I’ve had it since Friday, but you know, the lazy.

Being a smart-ass 101

Yes I said I’d be doing this yesterday. But alas, I was sidetracked. Fortunately for me, it was by hockey. My dad took my brothers and I to one of the World Junoirs games last night. Switzerland vs. Finland. It would have been nice to see a Canada game (my cousin’s boyfriend is their starting goalie), but it was one hell of a game to be sure. I’d go into greater detail, but this is gonna be a really long post as it is, so my words must be sparse. It was disappointing that the game ended in a tie, as I would have liked to see Finland win (I’m Finnish you know), but there’s not much that can be done about it. So now that my alibi is strung together, onto the preamble!

As I was rattling on about in the last post, I read a review of Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door in TV Guide. While I cannot truly disagree with the article on the whole, there are quite a few inaccuracies and the reviewer missed many important game elements. So as a site first, I shall taketh this review, and ripeth it apart paragraph by paragraph, and give my impressions on each. This also saves me from having to actually review the game myself. I would love to, but I’d have to play through again to get screenshots, and I have way too many incomplete games to start replaying one I’ve beaten. Now onto the feature!

Plumbing the depths

Heroes are a dime a dozen in gamedom, but few of them have the longevity or popularity of Nintendo’s Mario the plumber. The little man and his games are practically bulletproof.

No real problems here, except for nobody in the history of ever has ever called him “Mario the plumber”.

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is the follow-up to the N64’s original Paper Mario, which stretched the corners of his side-scrolling 2D world into a 3D adventure. It was his first appearance in a role-playing game, which was about the only kind of game that he and his crew hadn’t yet starred in.

Fuck. Just fuck. SUPER MARIO RPG: THE LEGEND OF THE SEVEN STARS, you twat. It’s only the most popular of the four Mario RPG games. You really shouldn’t make wild assumptions about things you clearly know nothing about. It’s not like anyone that knows better reads TV Guide anyway (except for me, apparently) but that mistake totally destroyed any credibility this guy once had. Not only that, but there was also at least one other 3D Mario game. Say, Super Mario 64. What a douche. And for the record, the Mario Party games were pretty damn 3D too.

Considering that Mario titles are usually aimed at kids, The Thousand-Year Door is long and pleasantly sophisticated. There’s plenty weird and wonderful in The Thousand-Year Door, as there is in all his trippy titles, but nothing is unfamiliar. Princess Peach reprises her role as the damsel in distress, various nefarious skills have been grafted onto his Goomba foes and the guy can’t seem to get through an adventure without wallowing in the sewers.

OK, most of this is pretty good, but there are a few things that were omitted (if only for the sake of fitting it on a single page). But before that, we’ll adress the “aimed at kids” issue. I don’t think Mario is aimed at kids. These days people label anything where intestines don’t spill as “for kids”. This is not true. Mario has always transcended age. If anything, Mario’s character is built more for adults. He’s a fat Italian plumber from Brooklyn. Come on. If there was only one specific group that could enjoy the character, it’s certainly not kids. So anyhow, there is plenty of unfamiliar in the game. From a town that could be called “a wretched hive of scum and villainy” in another time and place to his first jaunt into space in a very long time (Last time was in Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins. Mario Pary games don’t count.), there is plenty of new territory to be covered in this game. It’s even got Russian Bob-ombs. Oh, and let’s not forget the glory that is actually playing as Bowser (though it doesn’t last long, it’s awesome). Finally, Peach does reprise the whole damsel in distress role, but this time she does it right. There isn’t nearly as much boring Peach gameplay in this one.

The most novel feature here is the battle system. As with other heroes – guitar, gladiatorial or other – Mario has to perform with style is he wants to win hearts and minds. Battles in The Thousand-Year Door are literally staged events, complete with rising curtains and, at least if the battle is going his way, an audience whose enthusiasm spurs him in combat.

All true, there isn’t much else to say here. An (inter)active battle system is a good battle system. But really, the audience isn’t good for much other than filling your star power. This is a vast improvement over that wishing thing or whatever it was you had to do in the first Paper Mario. Anything else they do is usually insignificant or bothersome, like turning on fog machines to reduce accuracy or “accidentally” freezing Mario with onstage ice machines. Yes, they may throw you a Dry Shroom (Dry Shroom = worthless) every once in a blue moon, but most of the time, they just throw rocks.

Mario has been hardwired from the beginning to be heroic and doing the right thing is pathological for him. When allies ask what the next move is, there is never any choice for him to contiune doing the right thing. It’s not a bad lesson for the kids at Christmas, but it doesn’t exactly break gameplay wide open.

I smell a Fable fanboy. It’s not that impressive. With all that crazy crap you can do, the real game is probably short and boring. But I’m not really out to bash Fable. I’ve not played it, (but I will have after Christmas) so I can’t say for sure if my intuition is correct on this one. Anyhow, I guess I can’t really attack this paragraph, but you do get choices a when it comes to a lot of things. Only most of the the time they just repeat the question infinitely until you pick the answer they want to hear (But thou must!). And I’d like to see any other game where you can fold up into a plane or a boat. And if there is, I bet the method of getting those abilities isn’t anywhere as amusing as how you come across them in this game.

The Thoudand-Year Door doesn’t present any real choice and in many ways is as linear as the 2D side-scrollers from the days of the SNES.

Must… suppress… urge to kill… If he knows so much about the days of the SNES, how in the hell did he miss Super Mario RPG?! How!?!? And for the record, Mario’s NES side-scrollers were much more linear than the one (Yoshi’s Island doesn’t really count) on the SNES. You had many path choices in Super Mario World. As for this “doesn’t present any real choice” gobbledygook, I don’t think the reviewer knew anything about the badges. Being able to customize Mario’s strengths and abilities to no end is quite a big one for the “choices to make” category. Oh, and then there’s the level-up system, in which you choose how you want Mario to develop, rather than in other RPGs where they just dole out random stats each level-up. And what is this about “linear”? Of course it’s linear you ass. Pretty much all games are when you get down to it. At least this one presents plenty of amusing sidequests, puzzles and mini-games to keep things interesting.

Yeah, that’s the end. I wonder if this guy has ever written a conclusion. His intro was good, but if that whole “no choices” thing was the conclusion, he probably got a zero out of five on all his essays for whatever novice writer’s class he took. Not that I’m saying I’m a better writer than he, but at least I conclude the stuff that spews forth from my mind. It’s usually crap in itself, but it’s there. And his conclusion is nowhere to be seen.

Well, I’ve accomplished my goal (and used the word gobbledygook in the process!). I critiqued an overall positive review of a game I like, and managed to come out sounding like I was trying to protect the game from words of hate. I guess it just happens. Mostly, I just wanted to make fun of the writer and his lack of conviction. It is a pretty flip-floppy review. I’m not sure whether he liked or disliked it (due to no conclusion), but the praise was more abundant than the hate. So that’s pretty much it. Like I said, I’ve accomplished my goal. So I’m leaving.

NOTE:The comics are going to be weekly, so you’ll have to wait until Monday for the next one.

Talk about your mix-ups

Well, I knew I would be busy today, but it turns out I was a lot busier than I had previously expected. Long story short, I decided that buying a set of drums was a foolhardy and premature idea, so I didn’t. And then I went to watch my obligatory yearly hockey game. You see, the older two of my bros play hockey, and I have to go see one game for each a year, and I got one out of the way today. I did get dinner, coffee and Fun-Dip out of it though, so it wasn’t a total waste of my night.

Anywho, this means that the review will be postponed until Monday. Otherwise, everything is still moving pretty smoothly. I get to wear a costume to work tomorrow, and since I really have nothing else, I was thinking along the lines of shirt ninja. I’ve got a shirt, and a toy sword, so it should come together nicely.

That’s really all I had to do, explain why the review isn’t up yet. I got the pictures and stuff done, just need to write it up. And fortunately, that’s the less boring part of the process. Oh, and I saw some review of the Sims 2 on TV today, and my mom was watching too, and she thought the idea and process of “WooHoo” was absolutely hilarious. Plenty of great car ride funnies too, since I spent the greater part of the day in the van with the family. Oh boy, today was a hoot. Thank God I didn’t end up having to work after all.
