Monthend Video Game Wrap-Up: April 2021

~ Game Over ~

Super Mario 3D Land (3DS) – I did all the Special worlds. As if that’s a surprise. But I’m not playing the entire game again as Luigi. Probably.

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD (WiiU) – You know what’s weird? Nintendo put a lot of work into refining Wind Waker for this remake, but they didn’t add in any of the dungeons that were apparently cut to get the original game out the door faster. I wonder why. Were said dungeons completely incomplete? Were they maybe just not very good? I guess us regular folk will never really know.

Hitman (2016) (Stadia) – Very cool game that does a lot to make stealth-based gameplay fun. Janky in a lot of ways, but never so much that it ruins the experience. Also, holy cow are there a lot of things to do. The extra missions and challenges really at a ton of value to a game that would be very short if you were to just mainline the story.

Ys Origin (Switch) – I watched a speedrun of Ys III a while ago, and it got me very interested in this series which I know nothing about. Seems like the first game in the timeline would be a good place to start, right? Indeed! This is a very fun little action RPG with enjoyably tough boss fights. I played the Yunica route, as it seemed like more fun to be a girl swinging a huge battle axe around.

Ys Origin (Switch) – Second run, this time through the Hugo storyline. Notched the difficulty down to Easy, which shaved three hours off the previous run. Also, it was super satisfying to just melt away the bosses’ HP bars after struggling against most of them on Normal.

The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures (GC) – Before I started playing it, I was dreading this. But then it turns out that it’s actually very good, even if you’re playing by yourself. Gets a little bit dicey near the end, but overall not a bad way to spend a weekend.

Ys Origin (Switch) – Third run, with the secret unlockable character that lets you see the story from a completely different viewpoint. It honestly made playing the game a third time totally worth it.

The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap (GBA) – I remembered two things about this game from the last time I played it: It’s a lot of fun, and the figurine collection is a pain in the butt. Both of those memories hold true.

Pac-Man 99 (Switch) – I’ve said many times before that I’m not into “battle royale” type games. Though I guess that declaration is only true when said games are about shooting other players to death, because I’m having an absolute blast with this one.
