Monthend Video Game Wrap-Up: December 2021

~ Game Over ~

Ys Seven (PC) – I wrote about how I was struggling a bit near the halfway point, but the difficulty of Nightmare mode kind of cleared up after that. At least until the final bosses, which required a heck of a lot of grinding to beat. Still a very good game, just not one you should play on the hardest difficulty setting.

The Room (PC) – Having no relation to the infamous movie of the same name, this is a game about solving a series of puzzle boxes. It was a lot of fun, though the puzzles were maybe a little bit on the easy side. Took less than two hours to complete all five chapters, and I look forward to playing the sequels.

Outer Wilds (PS4) – What a game! I can’t believe that I was completely disinterested in it until very recently. It’s a little like Subnautica, being an adventure/puzzle game in an open world, and leaves it up to the player to figure out what to do. Only instead of underwater, Outer Wilds takes place in space! And also it’s way less buggy. And there’s no crafting. Maybe it’s not really that much like Subnautica after all.

Five Nights at Freddy’s: Security Breach (PS5) – Whoof. I have so many thoughts about this one. It’s an open-world(ish) adventure game where stealth is the main gameplay, but also has a good number of mini-games to keep things fresh. Sadly, it is riddled with bugs and performance issues. But I did quite like it! I’ll just like it more once the patches start rolling in.

Maize (PC) – An adventure game set on a farm, where you are tasked with discovering the secrets of the sentient corn. Short and maybe a little too easy, but charming as heck and genuinely funny. Vladdy is the GOAT.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Switch) – And with that, I have completed every main Legend of Zelda game in 2021. And also Four Swords Adventures. Good for me!

Trash Quest (Switch) – Mini-metroidvania about a raccoon loose in a starship. 100%ed the main game in almost exactly an hour, and then attempted the super-hard DLC for ten minutes. It requires sequential pixel-perfect inputs, and I ain’t playin’ that noise.

Pokémon Shining Pearl (Switch) – It’s a good remake, adding some nice new features and QOL upgrades, but Sinnoh is still the most boring region in Pokémon by far.

~ Progress Notes ~

Hitman 2 (2018) (PS4) – Grinding out challenges in Paris & Sapienza.

Cyberpunk 2077 (PC) – Found a dead lady in cyberspace.

Kathy Rain: the Director’s Cut (PC) – Day 3.
