Month End Video Game Wrap-Up: August 2024

~ Game Over ~

Beyond Good & Evil – 20th Anniversary Edition (PC) – 20 years later, I finally understand why this game has a cult following that is desperate for a sequel. I’m not in that boat myself, but I get it. Alas, to a cynical Modern Ryan, it seems kinda like a very ambitious project that ran out of money halfway through development.

Peglin (PC) – Several rather large updates means, of course, more Peglin.

TMNT: Splintered Fate (Switch) – 2000+ words coming soon. I like this one. A Lot.

Five Nights at Freddy’s: Into the Pit (PC) – Based on a novella and with gameplay in the style of a point-and-click adventure (but without the literal point-and-clicking), it seemed an odd move for the franchise. But I actually quite enjoyed this game. Enough that I played it through four times and am strongly considering learning the speedrun.

Colin Thiele’s: Storm Boy – The Game (PS4) – Another game based on a book. This one is also a side-scroller that is focused on narrative and contains just under a dozen mini-games. The creepy amount of similarities aside, it’s actually nothing like Into the Pit.

Another Code Recollection (Switch) – Finally dusted this one off after many months. I’m very glad that I did, too, because it ended up being very fulfilling. I would have liked a little more in the gameplay department, but all the other parts make up for how little there was to do and how easy the puzzles are.

Lunistice (PC) – Here’s the review I left on Steam: “So, I really like this game. The music is great, the platforming is tight, the stages are big without being overwhelming. Basically everything about it design-wise worked for me. HOWEVER! I think it probably took me legitimately about an hour to finish the game, but I have three hours on record because the game crashed at least a dozen times across my playthrough. I don’t know if this is the game being unstable, or if it was caused by something on my end, but the constant crashing really ruined the experience for me. I’d like nothing more than to give Lunistice a big ol’ recommendation, but I can’t. It’s simply too broken.” 🙁

Call of the Sea (PS5) – A first-person adventure in which you play as a woman who is searching for her missing husband on a remote island. I had a wonderful time with this game; everything about it is excellent. The environments are varied and beautiful, the puzzles are complex and reasonably challenging, and the story kept me guessing until the end. One of the best games I’ve played this year, no question.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (GBA) – I played this entirely because I wanted to listen to the credits theme, and it seemed more fun to play the game than to simply look up the song on YouTube.
