Monthend Video Game Wrap-Up: July 2023

~ Game Over ~

Akane the Kunoichi (PC) – I remember playing the demo of this waaaaay back on Xbox 360. It’s a very 2011 indie platformer. Which is to say that it’s very simplistic in both visuals and gameplay. Not bad, but nothing special.

Peglin (PC) – Peglin a while, Peglin forever!!

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (Switch) – What an incredible ride. In my opinion, there’s absolutely no competition for Game of the Year 2023.

Dread X Collection (PC) – A bundle of 10 short horror games that act as proofs of concept for bigger ideas. Some were good, some were less good, one was massively broken. My top three, in order, are Outsiders, Hand of Doom, and Summer Night.

Sayonara Wild Hearts (Switch) – I don’t even know how to describe this one other than “a fever dream.” A short, flashy, fast, and fun game set to an amazing soundtrack. Highly recommend you go check this one out.

Little Nightmares (Switch) – Horror puzzle platformer, been on my to-play list since it came out in 2017. It’s strongly inspired by Limbo, which means that while it is fun and creepy, it is full of gotcha moments that result in cheap deaths.

Rainy Season (PC) – The chillest game, wherein you are a child stuck at home on a rainy day. The goal is literally to kill time, poke around the house, and bother your relatives. I wouldn’t call it fun per se, but I enjoyed my time with it.

CURSE (PC) – I thought this would be a fun, spooky, first-person point-and-click adventure. And it kind of is, but… it’s also intensely linear and has a number of somewhat annoying attack sequences. Unfortunately, kinda meh overall.

FNAF Security Breach: Ruin (PS5) – What a great little DLC campaign this is! The gameplay is tight, fun and not horribly broken like the base game is. Alas, it doesn’t really tie up any of the lingering plot threads…
