Monthend Video Game Wrap-Up: May 2023

~ Game Over ~

Peglin (PC) – Imagine Peggle, but as a roguelike. Not something I’d normally give a second thought, but it’s so much more fun than it has any right to be. It’s a bit short, but still in Early Access, so there’s potentially a lot of room to grow.

Xenoblade Chronicles 3: Future Redeemed (Switch) – Now THIS is the heaping helping of fanservice that I was hoping the base game would be. Simply being able to go on another adventure with Shulk (and Rex too, I guess) made my heart so happy. Plus they added a similar system as the last few Ys games had that tracks all the collectibles and treasures you’ve found, which really should be in every RPG.

Lost Alone Ultimate (PC) – I watched let’s plays of all three chapters of Lost Alone when they were originally released last year, and really enjoyed them, so I was very excited to play this remade collection. Easily one (three?) of my favourite Steam horror games in recent years.

I Hope She’s Okay (PC) – A short first-person adventure game which takes place in rural Finland, which I like, as a person of Finnish descent. The gimmick of the game is that your character is constantly posting adventure updates on social media and her friends comment on every post the whole way through. I thought it would be very annoying, but I actually found it’s unique flavour to be endearing.

DRAGON: A Game About a Dragon (PC) – A cute action platformer that looks like it was drawn with crayons. The visuals and the music are by far the best parts, as the gameplay is pretty slow and generic. Unfortunately, the final boss is incredibly difficult, and that really hurt my overall opinion of the game.

The Looker (PC) – First-person puzzler parodying The Witness. Only I’ve never played that game, so that part of it was kind of lost on me. But The Looker was still pretty fun. Although not quite as funny as it hoped to be, I got a good big chuckle at the finale.

Is Simon There? (PC) – Yet another indie horror game about roaming around a house to uncover the truth of your tragic past. This one is quite short, though, and… well, that’s most of what it has going for it. At least it’s not really bad in any way.
