Monthend Video Game Wrap-Up: October 2023

~ Game Over ~

Gal Guardians: Demon Purge (Switch) – Ran this one into the ground with the 100% clear. Read many more words about it here! Somewhat spooky.

Pikmin 1 (Switch) – It feels a little rough, coming directly from the incredible Pikmin 4, but man, it’s still such a good game. Would have been nice if Nintendo had added a few of Pikmin 4’s quality-of-life features for this re-release. Oh well! No spooks here.

Mercenary Kings: Reloaded Edition (PC) – After a little over a year of playing it on and off, it’s finally done! A little grindy, yes, but despite that, it was still pretty fun. And I got a nice, long YouTube series out of it. Hardly spooky at all.

Peglin (PC) – It is done. It’s finally done!! Very mildly spooky.

The Telephone (PC) – The spiritual sequel to one of my favourite indie horror games, Lost Alone. It’s very similar in terms of gameplay, but I didn’t like the story as much as Lost Alone’s. Also, this game did not need combat. The “combat” is actually kind of bad. Intensely spooky, if only because of the genuinely disturbing VHS tapes.

Layers of Fear (2023) (PS5) – I had no idea that Bloober had remade Layers of Fear until months after release. I equally had no idea how much additional content was actually included in said remake. It’s definitely something other developers should take a look at when deciding how to do remakes/collections. Fairly spooky.

Mare (Quest) – More of an interactive experience than a game, I bought this because people said it was good and reminiscent of Ico. Fly around as a robot bird and guide a little girl through treacherous ruins. I wouldn’t call it one of my favourite games, but it was fun, and the complete lack of verbal storytelling left me thinking about it for a few days. Not really spooky.
