Probably too many to fit in this little blurb space, so here’s the cliff notes: very good game overall, great story, great characters, great atmosphere, but is lacking a certain je ne sais quoi in regards to its Silent Hill-ness. I kind of despised the stealth gameplay (but liked the puzzles) and never want to play it again, but still had an overall very good time (the puzzles were real good). I told you it was complex.

Pokémon Fire Red (Switch) – Well this isn’t a very spooky game, is it? No. But you know what was? Trying to beat the Elite Four with my nuzlocke team. I managed to tough it out eventually, but definitely lost the nuzlocke when Lorelei wiped almost my entire party on my first attempt.

Weeping Falls Massacre (PC) – An indie horror where you travel to an abandoned orphanarium to discover the cause of a massacre that happened there years earlier. Not quite a walking simulator, because there is a stalker enemy during the second half of the game, but he really isn’t much of a threat due to extremely basic AI. I had a good enough time running around and solving basic puzzles, only took about an hour and a half, and the price was right at free.

Metal Garden (PC) – Not really a horror game in the typical sense, but there’s maybe like a light cosmic horror element? I don’t know, I didn’t really understand the plot. Anyway, it’s an FPS with a lot of exploration, some puzzles, and a whole heckuva lot of grey. Not the most visually interesting, but the gameplay was solid and I wouldn’t hesitate to say that I enjoyed it.

198X (PC) – Remarkably un-spooky. I don’t remember it at all, but apparently I played this back in Jan of 2020. And I had a more favourable opinion of it back then. Like, cool idea and all, but I kind of can’t stand the main character. Teen drama just gets more and more unappealing to me as I age.

Carnival Massacre (PC) – A retro-styled survival horror (I seem to be playing a lot of these this year) wherein you travel to a spooky carnival to search for your lost sister. It’s very short and more than a little janky, but had some fun moments and would probably be a really good speedrun game. More than a few times while playing, I thought it felt a lot like a lower-budget Alisa.

Terror at Oakheart (PC) – A side-scrolling adventure game that pays tribute to the slasher films on the 80s and 90s. Most of it is very by-the-book and linear, culminating with a somewhat frustrating final boss. That said, I enjoyed the spirit of it all, and the pixel animations are simply fantastic.

VESSELS: Noiret Mansion (PC) – It’s like Resident Evil in a dollhouse. And also first-person. But seriously, it’s a pretty decent retro survival horror. Could have benefitted from at least one more gun, and the bosses are way too spongy, but it was a brisk adventure that had some very good moments and a story that was surprisingly touching.

Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse (Switch) – While it’s not exactly the Castlevania I would have hoped for, I warmed up quickly to its unique mechanics and ended up very much enjoying it. The movement feels great once you have Rose’s full set of abilities, and most of the bosses are tough as nails. Decent enough story, and what seems to be lots of optional content that I have yet to dig into.

Until Dawn (2024) (PS5) – A second playthrough makes me feel like maybe I’ll give this version one more go next year, to round up the last few trophies, and then go back to the original. It’s just… somehow the controls in this version completely suck if you’re not moving in a straight line. Among other issues. I’m going to miss the much more forgiving “don’t move” sections of this one, though.

Silent Hill (PSX) – While not necessarily an annual one, it’s tradition.

~ Progress Notes ~

Pokémon Pokopia (Switch2) – Pumpkaboo’s Halloween event! Also I built a spooky house on a hill for the Chandelure family, to fit the season.

Fitness Boxing 3 (Switch2) – Only managed to reach Gold II this month, mostly due to other priorities.

Teardown (PC) – Multiplayer goofery.

~ Purchases ~

The Tower on the Borderland (PC)

Vessels: Noiret Mansion (PC)

Carnival Massacre (PC)

Terror at Oakheart (PC)

Metal Garden (PC)

Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse (Switch)

Final Fantasy Resonance (Switch2)

Suffer the Night (PC)

Monster Hunter Stories (Switch)

Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin (Switch)

~ Game Over ~ Silent Hill: Townfall (PS5) – You know, I’ve got a lot of very complex thoughts about this game.
