Monthend Video Game Wrap-Up – July 2016

Sometimes I think that I need to grow out of being upset that I don’t get summer vacation any more. I mean, it’s been well over a decade since I finished high school. In the time that I’ve been out of school, kids have started and finished school. But you know what? Nuts to that. I miss having two months to do whatever I damn well pleased.

~ Game Over ~

Final Fantasy VII (PC) – I’m amazed at how much shorter this game is than I remembered. I mean, I suppose it’s in part from not having sought out all the ultimate weapons and other fancy doo-dads, but even with a few hours of grinding and breeding a gold chocobo, the final time clocked in at under 40 hours. Crazy! (The time investment for prepping to fight the Emerald and Ruby Weapons is a whole other story.)

BOXBOXBOY! (3DS) – When I finished BOXBOY!, the only thing in the world that I wanted was more BOXBOY!. And now I have it! And it’s sooooooooooo good! And the ending suggests that there could be up to three more sequels. Hooray!

Kill the Plumber (PC) – A silly little mobile-feeling game where you take the role of not-goombas to kill not-Mario. Seconds-long, single-screen challenges with three-star rankings. Everything about it sounds bad, but I was engaged for the three hours or so it took to clear all the main levels. I didn’t bother with the extra stages because it wasn’t that much fun.

Resident Evil: Revelations 2 (PS4) – I bought it mostly for Raid Mode, but I played through the story again anyway. It’s a whole lot of fun! Also, do I ever love Raid Mode.

~ Now Playing ~

Monster Hunter Generations (3DS) – This is why I want a period of two months where I have no other responsibilities. There is a true love in my life, and it is Monster Hunter.

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword (Wii) – I thought that I was going to be done by the end of the month, but it seems like there’s just always something else to do. Stay tuned for the weekly recaps, I guess.

Pokémon GO (iOS) – There’s more to the game, but I’m mostly in it to catch ’em all. Perhaps someday I’ll care about claiming gyms and doing battles and what-have-you, but right now it’s just fun to actually travel all over the place searching for Pokémon.

Final Fantasy VIII (PC) – Hooray! My favourite Final Fantasy by a country mile. Okay, maybe not by that much, because I also really like FFXIII. No, I don’t know why the FFs that are typically disliked are the ones that I enjoy the most.

Fallout 4 (PS4) – I have a feeling that we’re going to be seeing this one show up here for quite a number of months to come. Or maybe not, who knows? What I do know is that the DLC is crazy expensive, so I’ll probably just stick with the base game this time around.

Hyrule Warriors Legends (3DS) – Now that Legend mode is 100%ed, it’s back to the adventure maps. Also the Link’s Awakening DLC came out so now it’s all Marin all the time.

Tap My Katamari (iOS) – Another clicker game for the pile. Between this and Cookie Clicker and Clicker Heroes, I think I’m legitimately wasting my life at this point. At least Sakura Clicker was so poorly balanced that I was able to dump it.
